The children, who were overflowing of eager, waited patiently for their reader. As soon as someone walked in with a book, the kids dropped their tasks to take a look. Hurray, great timing, you’re finally here! The class huddled around, as they greeted with cheers.

TSA – Bay To Bahia 2010
The “Bay to Bahia: Brazil 2010” trip is a dream that we have been moving toward for several years. Now is the time to make international travel for our students a reality. The opportunity for students to “travel to Brazil for two weeks and participate in academic, cultural, performing arts, and service-learning activities” is the beginning of a life-long appreciation for travel. For the majority of our students travel to Brazil will be the first time they will interact with individuals who share a common African ancestry yet speak a different language. There is much to be shared and learned. The students have all the motivation, interest and commitment they could ever need. All that keeps us from getting to Brazil is money.
Your generous donation now is not only appreciated but also essential to the cost-effective purchasing of airline tickets, student travel visas and early deposits for room and board.

Buy a Book, Give a Book – Emery’s First Bookfair!
With the great sponsorship and support provided by Barnes & Noble on Bay Street, the Emery Ed Fund will be having its very first public bookfair event. Beginning October 30 and lasting through November 6, Barnes & Noble will donate a percentage of sales on every purchase in the store, excluding gift cards, membership fees, textbooks and magazine subscriptions. These donations from Barnes & Noble will help fund Emery Ed Fund Programs for the schools of Emeryville. Help give the gift of knowledge—what better excuse to buy a new book is there?
To kick off this exciting event, cast members from Wicked A New Musical will be performing Friday October 30th at 4:00pm! So stop on by, bring your friends and help spread the spectacular news because your support is greatly needed!
Also, don’t forget about the Emery Book Drive, another program Barnes & Noble is holding to provide new books for the Emeryville School Libraries.

Emery Library Book Drive – Fill Our Bookcases!
In celebration of the 30th birthday of the BILLY bookcase, Ikea, another great partner, is donating bookcases and has arranged for Lisa Quinn—television host of View from the Bay—to air one of the episodes at Anna Yates Elementary School.
Barnes & Noble and the Emery Ed Fund have been working to get our bookcases filled with new books! Librarians created a wish list of 160 book titles that were needed and Barnes & Noble is placing the desired books on display at their Emeryville location on Bay Street. In order to fill our bookcases, we are relying on the community to help support children literacy by purchasing a book from the display and donating it. If you would like to participate, simply visit Barnes & Noble on Bay Street, select a book from the Emery Libraries Display and notify the service rep that you would like to donate the book. And remember! If you donate to the book drive using a book fair voucher between October 30–November 6, you will also be contributing to the book fair program! One act of kindness; two positive outcomes.
Novartis Supply Donations
As an agreement made in August 2009 to support the Emeryville School District, Novartis V&D generously donated equipment and supplies to the Emery Ed Fund. Today we received yet another batch of “Donated Matierals”; 6 boxes full of supplies like paper, folders, binders and storage units! Teachers and staff of the Emeryville school district were contacted about the great news and were told to come by and claim their desired supplies.
Donations like this, no matter how meager it may seem, goes a long way! Thank you Novartis!
New Emery Ed Fund
Welcome to the new Emery Ed Fund website! The biggest change yet is the inclusion of WordPress as our back end. We have been carefully walking the shorelines of Web 2.0, but now we have decided to take a small dip.
So how can we all benefit from this great change? Well, on our side we will be able to update and manage our website in a more organized and effective manner. We can concentrate more on getting the needed information to the public, and not have to worry with all the technical matters attached to website development.
With the many features that WordPress has to offer, our website will not only be more straight forward to navigate through, but also provide you (the viewing public) more control in what you want to look at. WordPress’ ability to archive and categorize our articles/pages will give you the option to easily search and locate the information that you need.
There may be some sections down, we are transferring the content in asap so please be patient!
Emery Ed Fund Launches Matching Campaign
The Emery Ed Fund is proud to announce that its partner, Rich Robbins and Wareham Development has pledged $60,000 to the Ed Fund for unrestricted support for the operations and administration of the Emery Ed Fund, which when matched, will fund a total of $120,000 in support of the critical programs of the Fund.
Founded in 1996, the Emery Ed Fund serves as a catalyst, providing significant financial support, intellectual connections, and critical human resources through its volunteer and mentorship programs, enhancing Emeryville’s work in critical ways. In the last three years the Emery Ed Fund and partnerships between the Emery Unified School District and the city have resulted in several millions of dollars of programmatic support combined with the leverage of several hundred professional and parent volunteers. The Stuart Wayne and Gladys Valley, and San Francisco Foundations, The Walter and Elise Haas Fund, among others, and state and federal grants (Twenty First Century, Gear Up) have provided concrete programs and progress toward impacting the reforms necessary, as well as those necessary to contribute to establishing the Center for Community Life.
In spite of the noteworthy success, the Fund remains lean, particularly since the highest priority is to raise program funds and pass them onto the teachers and leadership of Emery schools. Therefore, unrestricted funds are in short order. “I would encourage our great business community to help join this effort. There is always doubt and concern when giving funding to administrative/unrestricted needs. I too had serious concerns. Wareham has researched this need with the Emery Ed board. We feel these times and this need is unique and it is justified; while the need is compelling to keep the good work and tremendous progress that the district has experienced on track. We have requested that there be an accounting and analysis on the use of the funds at the completion of the school year. That is why we feel so strongly on this issue and that we have raised the ante and our contribution to this most worthy cause.”- Rich Robins, CEO of Wareham Development. Donors could match Wareham Development’s funding amount or give any amount that will help close the campaign gap.
Once the operations campaign challenge is fully funded, fund staff will secure the near one million dollar budget for critical initiatives that support the daily academic and social needs of Emeryville youth and their families. Staff will secure funds for summer program grants for youth, funds for summer internships, discretionary funds for site administrators, mini-grants to teachers, renewable scholarships for graduating seniors, new program grants for pilot projects in the schools, and funds in support of the arts, music, and technology needs of the Emeryville community. Finally, staff will work together with school district, city and other partners to secure additional major programmatic support needed to continue building the momentum required during the design phase for the Emeryville Center of Community Life anticipated in late 2011.
Please consider making a generous contribution to the Campaign. If you wish to make a donation, participate in Emery Ed Fund programs, need more information, or simply have a good idea for helping Emery Ed Fund help Emeryville’s schools, contact Eugenia Bowman, Executive Director at 510.601.4997.
Bayer HealthCare Awards $50,000 to Emery Ed Fund

Olivia Krampe, Vice President, Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals and Site Head (on left), presents check to Eugenia Bowman, Executive Director of the Emery Ed Fund.
Emeryville students will start this school year with a new option for learning: the Technology Education Initiative, featuring hardware, software, a responsive and evolving curriculum, and plenty of teacher and volunteer support. A $30,000 grant from Bayer HealthCare’s Emeryville facility will support this program and a new initiative in the district for Science in Art. Bayer’s contribution topped off the $150,000 Tech Ed Initiative, which began in 2008 with a matching dollar for dollar grant of up to $75,000 from Madison Marquette Property Group, owners of Emeryville’s Bay Street Mall. Other donors who pledged to secure the challenge grant include Wareham Development, Pixar Animation Studios and the Rogers Foundation.
“I’m thrilled that we are contributing in a meaningful way to advance science and technology education in Emeryville and that, for the first time, middle and high school students will have access to an educational and workforce development program that will prepare them for an array of careers in our technology-driven society,” notes Olivia Krampe, vice president and Emeryville site head. As an Alameda Country Arts Anchor school district, District leaders have been working over the last few years to integrate hands on experience with art materials and an understanding of science. Bayer’s setting the pace with a portion of their award to initiate a “Science in Art Program” which will not only connect scientific principles to artistic education, it will support the community’s thriving arts enterprises – from individual artist studios to major studios such as Pixar.
Bayer also awarded the Emery Ed Fund an additional $20,000 as a lead sponsor of its annual Pixar Animation Studios Pre-Release Gala Benefit. This provides general support, in recognition of the far-reaching work the Fund does in uniting business, government and educational leaders to benefit the diverse student body in this low-income community. Nearly 80% of Emeryville students are living in poverty, and 14% are English language learners.
“Emeryville is a place where partners power student and people success, and connections,” said Executive Director of the Fund, Eugenia Bowman. “Our unique model of the community working together is contributing to a 21st century model city design that will give students, residents and local businesses and employees connections of significance, resources, empowerment, and a real sense and presence of neighborhood and community—all the ingredients necessary build assets and bridge the way to a better life for our families. It is the leadership and commitment of our partners, like Bayer HealthCare, that make these gains possible.”
“With Bayer’s global commitment both to science education and volunteerism supporting the Emery Ed Fund is a natural. It advances the company’s Making Science Make Sense program and our new BASEC—Bayer Advocates for Science, the Environment, and Community—volunteer campaign,” said Krampe. “I encourage all Emeryville residents and employees to learn more about the Emery Ed Fund, and consider getting involved in our local schools!”
Among other programs, the Emery Ed Fund has a dynamic school volunteer program, offering local residents and employees of local companies with opportunities to work with students once a year or on a regular basis in classrooms, gardens, the new computer center, on environmental or science education projects, and other projects throughout the school year. For more information, if you wish to make a donation, participate in Emery Ed Fund programs, or simply have a good idea for helping the Emery Ed support Emeryville’s schools, contact Eugenia Bowman, Executive Director at 510-601-4997, and consult the website at www.emeryed.org.

Thomas Chun

Technical Assistant
In early 2009, Thomas Chun was in need of a part time job to compliment his return to college and financial needs. By pure luck, he was referred to a position as the Technical Assistant of the Emery Ed Fund. Thomas immediately accepted knowing very well he could perform and excel in his duties and started his work the day after his interview. His time has been spent well, applying his artistic and technical skills to the needs of the staff.
Don’t let his Bachelor of Arts in Music from UC Santa Barbara fool you. Thomas is a flexible individual with much diversity in his abilities. With half his life immersed in computers and technology, it is no wonder he is so well in tangent with producing graphics, animations, music and videos. He is now attending Ex’pression College for Digital Arts to obtain his second Bachelor’s degree in Motion Graphic & Design.
Although his position says otherwise, he is still very much the artist, taking on responsibilities involving graphic design and internet exposure for the Emery Ed Fund. He has revamped and reconstructed the website, produced flyers and continually aims to find new ways to visually stimulate the audience.
Phillip Powell

Program Manager
C. Phillip Powell is a native of San Francisco, CA. Since the age of fourteen Phillip served the city of San Francisco as an activist and had a large impact in politics and government. He has served in many capacities including: numerous Mayoral advisory committees, youth commissioner, and an arbitrator. For Mr. Powell’s years of service and dedication to the city of San Francisco, he has received several honors by organizations, businesses, Board of Supervisors, and former Mayor Willie Brown. One of which was a certificate of honor for special and invaluable service to the city of San Francisco by the United States Congress.
Phillip is a Magna Cum Laude honors graduate of Fisk University in Nashville, TN wherein he received a B.A. in Psychology, Religion, and Philosophy. Mr. Powell has also furthered his studies at the University of Memphis in Tennessee; California State University, and abroad at Estudio Sampere in Salamanca, Spain.
Phillip was hired in 2007 as an assistant to the administration at Emery Secondary School and Emery Unified School District while serving as the Assistant Director of the Extended Day Academy. In 2008 Mr. Powell was hired by the Emery Education Foundation as program manager. As program manager, he oversees an extensive volunteer program, mentorship program, internship program, administers all district/teacher grants, program administration, and scholarships. He is also overseeing the Achievers Awards Scholars Program with Meritus College Fund as Program Manager in San Francisco. Phillip is passionate and is interested in seeing youth who encountered obstacles and have socio-economic challenging backgrounds succeed and accomplish their goals.

John Sugiyama

EUSD Superintendent
BY AMANDA MARTINEZ // Retired for almost two years, former superintendent of Dublin John Sugiyama received an unexpected phone call from the Alameda County Office of Education, asking him if he would come back. “They informed me that Emery may be in need of an interim superintendent and asked if I would be interested in being considered for the position,” he said.
In early September, the Emeryville school district found itself suddenly without a superintendent following the abrupt departure of Stephen Wesley, who stepped down after it was discovered his resume was filled with phony credentials.
By October 1, the school board had come to a unanimous decision to hire John Sugiyama during a closed session.
Sugiyama is new to the Emery school district but he is no stranger to the Bay Area. After attending schools in San Francisco and Berkeley, Sugiyama made Northern California his home base, working in Alameda, Pleasanton and Dublin school districts throughout his 35 years in education.
With a wide range of experience on his side Sugiyama says he has “hit the ground running.” Now, one month into the job InEmeryville staff talks to John Sugiyama about coming out of retirement, what he will do for the school community, and how joining the Emery School district is like coming home.

A resident of Emeryville for almost 20 years, she has lent her leadership continuously to the district and its schools while in high school and then again after college.
During high school, she was a proud member of Rotary/Interact Club and continues to embrace their motto, “Service Above Self.” A student internship through a partnership with Chiron Corporation (now Novartis) offered Melodi the opportunity to know and understand business environments. That early partnership has fueled Melodi’s professional success as she is currently employed as Head of Patent Services, Vaccines and Diagnostics for Novartis!
Melodi graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Fashion Merchandising and a minor in Business Management from Bennett College in Greensboro, NC. Most recently, she completed her Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) at Holy Names University in Oakland, CA.
Melodi continues to prove her commitment to our schools by serving as an Emery USD Trustee for two elected terms. And, her history with our district continues to deepen through her family’s next generation – her much beloved niece – informing Melodi’s understanding of what our schools need today.
“I believe it is imperative that I participate in this community as this community gave me so much during my youth. I am excited to serve the people of Emeryville as a member of the tremendous team of Emery Unified School District. The families in Emeryville should know that I am working hard to ensure our kids have opportunities that only a few of us in my time were allowed.”

Lynn Ballard

Parent
Like Elphaba Thropp from the musical Wicked, Lynn is not purely wicked but she can be at times, particularly when it comes to advocating for equity in our schools. Lynn enjoys riding a broom. She not only enjoys riding a broom, she keeps motors attached to hers and encourages other parents to do the same.
Lynn has over two decades of experience in higher education, nonprofit administration, and organizational, community and economic development. She is a graduate of the University of Akron and Auburn University, where she taught in the Political Science Department as a Presidential Fellow. A former consultant to the U.S. Agency for International Development, Lynn has worked in urban and rural communities in the U.S. and Africa mainly on programs designed to expand educational and economic opportunities for minorities, low-income persons, women and youth. She was appointed by the National Park Service, U.S. Dept. of the Interior, to the Education and Interpretation Committee of the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site, a $100 million project under development in Macon County, Alabama. She edited the feasibility study submitted to Congress. She is most proud of her service on the Advisory Committee for the Tuskegee University National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care, which was established in partial response to President Clinton’s formal apology on May 16, 1997, for the federal government’s role in the Tuskegee Syphilis Study.
Lynn has lived in California since 2002. At Emery USD, she has been Director of Strategic Initiatives, founder of the Malcolm X Black Families Forum, a member of the Superintendent’s Parent Advisory Committee and a consultant on math and science initiatives. She has been instrumental in expanding opportunities for Emery students to take more rigorous courses. In 2005, Lynn successfully challenged Emery Secondary School, as well as prevailing assumptions about what ESS students are capable of achieving, by having her daughter and several of her 8th grade classmates enrolled in Geometry, which they took parallel to Algebra 1. Today, those students are taking AP Calculus BC in their senior year having completed AP Calculus AB in the 11th grade. From Lynn’s perspective, education equity is giving EVERY student an opportunity to achieve at their highest level, the focus of her work and advocacy at Emery.
Lynn is working on her first book which partially documents her journey at Emery and profiles some of the dedicated and often hilarious people she’s met in working towards social change.
